Yoga-Informed Therapy in Ottawa

If you're searching for yoga therapy in Ottawa, you might be looking for something gentler than a fitness class and more body-aware than talk-only support.

At Vistas Psychotherapy & Wellness, Amanda Carver is a Registered Psychotherapist who is also a certified yoga teacher. She sees clients in person by appointment at 317 Catherine St., and virtually across Ontario.

You're welcome to book a free consult to explore whether yoga-informed psychotherapy, one-on-one yoga instruction, or both might fit.

  • Amanda Carver, R.P., RYT-200
  • In person by appointment in Ottawa
  • Virtual across Ontario

Think of this work a little like adjusting a backpack you've been carrying for years. Same road, different fit. We're not throwing the pack away; we're loosening the straps, redistributing the load, and noticing how it feels to stop leaning forward against an invisible hill all day.

A quick clarification

Yoga-informed, not "yoga therapy"

In Ontario, yoga therapy isn't a regulated health profession, and no one at Vistas holds a yoga therapist certification. Instead of a blended "yoga therapy" label, we keep two services clearly separate:

  • Yoga-informed psychotherapy is psychotherapy, governed by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and billed as psychotherapy.
  • One-on-one yoga instruction is yoga teaching. It's a non-regulated wellness service, not psychotherapy, and it's billed as yoga instruction.

Is this a fit for you?

When stress seems to live in your body

People who reach out for yoga-informed support often describe:

  • Tight shoulders, jaw tension, or headaches after long days or hard conversations
  • Feeling "on" all the time, even when nothing obviously bad is happening
  • Wanting to reconnect with their body after trauma, illness, burnout, or a big life transition
  • Feeling flat, heavy, or shut down, with little energy for traditional exercise
  • Sleeping, but still waking up wired, tired, or both

If you've tried fast-paced yoga classes and left feeling more overwhelmed than grounded, you're not alone. For many people, the problem isn't yoga itself. It's the speed, the intensity, or the lack of attention to how the nervous system is responding.

If anxiety, trauma, or low mood are central for you, you might also explore anxiety therapy in Ottawa or EMDR therapy in Ottawa, with yoga-informed practices woven in at a pace that feels manageable.

Getting started

What a first session may feel like

First sessions tend to be spacious and slow.

You might start by talking through:

  • What brings you in now, and what you're hoping might feel different
  • Your past experiences with yoga, movement, or therapy, whether good, bad, or mixed
  • Any injuries, pain, or medical concerns
  • What already feels like a clear "no"

From there, you might explore a few gentle options:

  • A check-in with posture and breath, noticing whether small shifts change how your body feels
  • One or two low-intensity shapes for upper-body release, with lots of ways to modify or pause
  • A short grounding practice, like pressing your feet into the floor or lengthening your exhale, that you can use the same day

In psychotherapy, some sessions may be mostly conversation with brief movement, and EMDR may also be explored when appropriate, with readiness assessed together. In yoga instruction, more of the session is guided movement, breath, and rest. Either way, you set the pace.

Your pace, your choice

Every practice is an invitation

  • Nothing is required. You can stay seated, keep your eyes open, keep talking, or skip any practice.
  • No touch. All yoga-informed work at Vistas is clothed and non-contact, guided with words only.
  • Trauma-aware pacing. If breath or body focus feels uncomfortable, you can work with other anchors, like noticing one colour in the room or following a quiet sound.
  • Your body, your call. If you have an injury, are pregnant, or have a medical condition, check with your physician before starting a movement practice, and let your practitioner know.

Cultural safety means we honour your autonomy and your relationships, your family, community ties, and the knowledge systems that support you, if and when you choose to bring them in. You're welcome to request an Indigenous therapist or a culturally informed therapist if that feels important for your comfort or connection.

A note on Amanda's two roles

Amanda is both a Registered Psychotherapist and a yoga teacher, and she keeps those roles separate. She offers yoga instruction only where it fits the relationship, with care to avoid dual relationships, and doesn't take her current psychotherapy clients on as yoga students. Psychotherapy sessions are billed as psychotherapy; yoga sessions are billed as yoga instruction. How we bill our services →
