Beyond Willpower: Understanding Emotional Eating Through a Nervous System Lens

virtual or your location

Many clients describe themselves as lacking willpower around food. Yet beneath emotional eating is often an overwhelmed nervous system, unmet needs, and unprocessed emotions — not a lack of motivation or nutritional knowledge.

This Lunch & Learn explores emotional eating from a psychological and emotional perspective, helping clinicians recognize why traditional advice around nutrition, motivation, or self-control often falls short. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the emotional function of eating and practical strategies they can begin integrating into conversations with clients.

In this Lunch & Learn we will:

  • Define emotional eating and distinguish it from physical hunger
  • Explore how stress, emotions, and nervous system dysregulation influence eating behaviours
  • Understand why diets, restriction, and willpower often reinforce the emotional eating cycle
  • Learn the common emotional triggers that maintain food coping behaviours
  • Introduce practical strategies that support behaviour change
  • Discuss how clinicians can talk about emotional eating in a way that reduces shame and increases client engagement

Interactive Exercise — Case Reflection

Participants review a brief client scenario and discuss:

  1. How is emotional eating helping this client cope?
  2. What need is food meeting?

Rather than asking "Why can't this client stop eating?", they begin asking "How is food helping this client cope?"

Participants will leave with:

  • A new framework for understanding emotional eating
  • Practical language to use with clients
  • Greater confidence identifying emotional eating patterns
  • Resources they can immediately apply in practice
