Beyond Imagery: Body and Mindfulness Based Resourcing for EMDR Phase 2

virtual, as 120 Carlton, or at your location

EMDR's Phase 2 is often glossed over in training, despite how foundational it is — proceeding safely through reprocessing depends on a client's capacity to access regulation and containment. Most Phase 2 toolkits lean heavily on visualization-based resourcing, which works beautifully for many clients, but not all. For clients with aphantasia, or those who simply don't connect with imagery-based strategies, we need other doors in.

This workshop expands your Phase 2 toolkit with bottom-up, body-based approaches grounded in the science of neuroception, interoception, and sympathetic/parasympathetic regulation. You'll learn additional grounding, soothing, and containment strategies that work with the nervous system rather than relying on visualization alone — giving you more ways to meet clients where they are and prepare them for safe, effective reprocessing.

Whether you're newly trained in EMDR or have been practicing for years, this session offers practical tools to broaden how you support regulation in Phase 2 — rooted in physiology, not just imagination.

In this workshop, we will:

  • Explore the neuroscience of neuroception, interoception, and autonomic arousal as it relates to EMDR readiness
  • Identify the limitations of visualization-only resourcing, including for clients with aphantasia
  • Learn additional grounding, soothing, and containment strategies rooted in body-based and mindfulness approaches
  • Practice integrating these tools into existing Phase 2 protocols
  • Discuss how to assess client capacity for regulation before proceeding to reprocessing
